Coffee and marijuana, together at last.
Starting early next year, California-based Brewbudz will begin selling cannabis-infused coffee, tea and cocoa. The company’s pod delivery system — similar to K-cups — will be 100 percent compatible with the millions of Keurig systems already in American homes.
“It’s an opportunity to bring together two different rituals in life,” BrewBudz vice president Jeffry Paul told Westword. “Drinking coffee or tea is something that’s part of your every day … There’s also a ritual for marijuana, whether it’s medicinal or recreational.”
As with other coffee pods, customers will have their choice of either decaffeinated and caffeinated options. The cannabis choices will range from 10 milligrams of THC in each pod for recreational users, and 25 to 50 milligrams of CBD for medical users.
The pod problem
Brewbudz also sought to address how the single-serving pods impact the environment — an issue that has hounded many companies focused on single-serve coffee because of the inherent waste involved. To that end, the company created a mesh-based 100 percent compostable pod.
“Scientists and world-class experts got together to create the world’s only compostable mesh of its kind,” the site explains. “The distinctive ring on every pod comes from the skin of roasted beans and the lid is a combination of compostable materials and inks.”
When composted properly, the pods will break down completely in as little as five weeks, the company says.
As you might expect, this marriage of all the benefits of marijuana coupled with all the joys of drinking coffee and tea won’t come cheap. Each Brewbudz pod, available in January to customers in six states where cannabis is currently legal, will cost about $7.
